Encaustic Painting (all levels)

Encaustic painting is a process that produces impressive results with luminous and jewel-like surfaces and textures. Artists come to encaustic painting from working with many other mediums. Areas covered include: safe studio practices; making encaustic medium and surface preparation. Various demonstrations will be scheduled with plenty of time to experiment. Students will learn techniques such as melting through, line and edge, transfers, collage, and texture. Each person can choose to practice all these methods or pick those that interest them. At the end of the workshop artists will be familiar with a range of techniques which they can use in their work.

Paint, equipment, tools and small practice panels will be supplied for each demonstration. Bring 6"x8" to 9"x12”(braced) wood panels (not clayboard) if you’d like to make larger, more resolved work or just use the practice panels provided. Suggestions of optional materials or tools will be given prior to the workshop.

It is a intriguing process that produces impressive results with luminous and jewel-like surfaces and textures. Heated Wax can be fused and melted to create luscious layers for collage of paper, fabric and dried organic materials. You will learn safe studio practices, surface prep, fusing, creating smooth as well as textured surfaces, working with paper, transfers and working with photographs.
Each participant will be given a practice board for each technique I demonstrate. Equipment, paint, medium, brushes and tools will be supplied.
For larger work please bring 9×12 inch wood panels. An optional materials list will be sent once you register.

Blessed Sacrament School in Washington, D.C. 27th Annual Week of the Arts where our upper school students break from their regular curriculum and focus on the arts.

Encaustic consists of beeswax, pigment and damar resin and was first used by the Egyptians for their Mummy Portraits. The process is now updated with new tools and equipment. Participants will learn safe studio practices, surface preparation, how to create luminous smooth and textured layers, fusing, collage, and a variety of other techniques.

Encaustic or hot wax painting is a simple process that produces impressive results with luminous and jewel-like surfaces and textures. It is made up of molten beeswax, pigment and dammar resin. It can be smooth and shiny, textured and three dimensional all on the same painting. Participants will explore melting and fusing, intarsia (line and edge), transfers, accordion book making, texture, collage, scraping and incising. Join us in learning this once ancient process, now updated with new tools and equipment.

Beyond the Basics
In the afternoon: Work on developing a direction in your own paintings. For the artist who has had some experience with encaustic. Develop a direction and have use of the most up to date equipment with lots of space and light in a small group of 4 artists. I will also give a demonstration on transfers and creating texture. Follow those demos or work freely on your own.
